Inaugural Novia Charity Cricket Evening
Novia took to the field of play on Tuesday evening to do cricketing battle at the inaugural charity cricket evening, held at Bathampton in glorious sunshine. A generous and enthusiastic crowd travelled by boat to the picturesque setting of the rolling Somerset hills on the banks of the Kennet and Avon canal to watch the Novia Mallards take on the NISL Cricket team for the charity challenge trophy. The evening was held in aid of the Bath Rugby Community Foundation and as new main partners of Bath Rugby we were delighted to have a good turnout from the club, including new Novia favourites, Bath Rugby stars David Flatman, Andy Beattie and Nick Abendanon.
Nick, and also Matt Powell from the rugby club, joined the two sides and quickly improved the quality of the play. Under the watchful eye of umpires Denning and Allwright, a Novia Mallards side looking for a win after some disappointing recent form batted well first up, scoring 130 from their allotted overs, whilst the legions of fans took to the bar and hog roast. Despite a strong start from the NISL team, Abendanon’s pace proved too much, and after 4 wickets in an over from the Bath full-back, they limped to defeat against a jubilant Mallards outfit. Mallard’s Skipper Scott Beasley lifted the trophy and Richard Budneyj for NISL accepted defeat gracefully. The fundraising then resumed in earnest, with a raffle and auction raising almost £3000 for charity.
Generous sponsorship from FE, Dunstan Thomas, iTech, Digital Keystone, Project Assist, Robert Half, Marlin Hawk, Wishlist, and Insight Now ensured the final total will be around £5000 – a great result and many thanks to all who contributed, including Novia staff and those who donated raffle and auction prizes. These included Bath Rugby, Novia, Bath Spa Hotel, Woods, Sunguard, Kelway and O2.
We continue to gather contributions and look forward to presenting the Foundation with a sizeable cheque on 26th August – at the Bristol preseason game to be played at the Rec – and hopefully we’ll be cheering on a victory to set the boys on their way this season!
